I am a voracious reader but in today’s economic situation, buying or subscribing to magazines is out of the question. However, that doesn’t mean I would stop reading and give up the chance to improve my knowledge on different topics. I have discovered and used creative ways on not spending a cent on quality subscriptions yet still enjoy reading.

Borrow from friends and colleagues - I’m sure you know somebody who subscribe to international magazines such as Reader’s Digest and Time. Why not borrow from them? Ask your friends to lend you magazine issues which they have already finished reading. Just take care of the magazines as if they were you’re own and return promptly.
Read whatever magazine your office is subscribing - Most offices somehow subscribe to at least one publication, be it newspaper or magazine. Management would not subscribe to it unless they consider it important in your trade. So grab the chance to read for free and you also give the Boss the impression that you are seriously improving your knowledge.
Subscribe to free magazine- There are loads of magazines on the Internet which you can subscribe for free. There are sites which offer free delivered magazine and online edition. I personally subscribe to the following magazines:

E-mail Hackers Asking for Money

My officemate was surprised to receive an e-mail from our client requesting for money. She became suspicious since it was really unusual since a client would never send us an e-mail like that. She immediately called the person and it was confirmed that the e-mail hackers logged on to her e-mail address and changed the password . The person can no longer logged on to her e-mail and everybody in her address book received the same letter requesting for money.

These hackers are really getting creative with their craft. Here’s the content of that e-mail which I retyped in toto including the wrong spellings and grammar.

Please i am in a Critical situation right now which I will need your urgent response and I know this is a little strange but I recently make a trip abroad to united kingdom (london) unannounced. But unfortunately for me all my money got stolen at the hotel where I lodged due to a robbery incident happened in the hotel.

Life is not fair at the moment with me. It was suppose to be a secret trip abroad for a Conference before this incident happened. Currently all services has ceased. I can not call or receive calls. Even food has not been served. I look pale, weak and dirty. You know your true friends when you are in time of need.

I am confiding in you help me out soon. Please I want you to help me with money so please can you send me 1450pounds so I can settle all my bills here and return back. I would refund it back to you immediately I get home.

I Googled the address above and it is the address of Ben Agency company Lt. I don’t know if the company is aware that their address is being used by hackers. My officemate replied to the e-mail sender telling it to stop their scam and they will be reported to the authorities. Lo and behold! Whoever was on the other end replied that it’s not a scam and asking when the money can be sent.

Receiving Nigerian scam emails was a little annoying but to have your email hacked? It’s something to be worried about. E-mail hackers use sophisticated technology. Those of us who are non-techies will have no other means of defence but common sense. If you spend a lot of time online you should protect yourself from hackers and identity theft. So how do we avoid being victims of these hackers?

Use a password that is hard to guess. It’s better to have an alphanumeric password. In choosing a secret question, make sure that it is really a secret and only you knew the answer.
Do not give out your password, period.
If you’re checking your e-mail in internet cafes, make sure to logout always.
Change your password regularly.
Have a copy of your address book just in case you need to inform your contacts that you were hacked

Principles that will Help You Become a Tycoon

Lucio Tan’s 8 Secrets to a Happy Life originally appeared at Inquirer.net. It is very timely considering the difficulties we face today. A lot of people know that Lucio Tan had humble beginnings before he became a tycoon. Let’s learn from this successful businessman and who knows? We might be next. Below each principle are my own personal reflections.

1. Work hard to achieve your dreams.

There really are no shortcuts in life. How many of those who won the lottery really made good use of their money? Only a few I’m sure. Something that is not earned the hard way is lost easily. But something which you have worked hard for is valued and protected for life.

2. Take every opportunity, masama o mabuti, as an opportunity to learn and grow.

My personal financial insecurity is being compounded by the economic crisis the country is facing. It’s really difficult and it magnifies my shortcomings. I have made wrong decisions in the past that costs me money. However, I’d like to take this time as an opportunity for me to learn from my mistakes and never do them again. Pessimism has no place in my vocabulary. Though I get depressed at times, I always try to look at things positively. Hey, I’m alive! Good health is the only wealth I need. All others are easy to find.

3. Lead a simple life. Do not live beyond your means.

My lifestyle is really simple. I live in the province so I don’t have vices that come with living in the big city. But I have a poor financial habit and I do get to spend beyond my means. There’s still time for me to correct this no matter how hard. Commercialism is everywhere and we always fall prey to it we don’t have the discipline to prioritize our needs before our wants.

4. Do away with the very bad Filipino attitude of living on credit, or spending today, earning money tomorrow.

I’m guilty as charged. Credit card debts are the culprit of my financial troubles. I’m broke in the truest sense of the word. I’m working hard right now to undone this bad habit.

5. Be matipid; teach the kids the value of saving money and using money wisely.

Choose value over form, that’s what I always tell myself now. Don’t buy things that you don’t actually need. Pay yourself first by saving and spend what’s left. I noticed that as my income increase so does my expenses. I just wished I was taught that when I was a kid.

I envy my niece who’s only 11 years old. She learned to be entrepreneurial at a young age by tending their sari-sari store. Last summer she said she wanted to sell ice candy in the neighborhood so she asked me for P20 for her capital. I told her she may not enjoy her vacation that way. She replied she won’t mind and she needed money to buy the school bag that she wants. After a month her P20 became P200.

6. Make sure to pay your debts.

I pay my debts diligently. No matter how tempted I am to default on my payments I still pay because I believe it’s my obligation. We should always try to maintain a good credit standing. Banks and credit card companies maintain a database and you don’t want your name on the list of delinquent accounts. They will come to haunt you someday.

7. Don’t betray other people’s trust.

Trust when broken is hard to regain. There are people who will do business with you out of trust. You can always bank on a good name.

8. Take care of your parents, your other elders.

A big part of my expenses right now goes to parental support. I have no regrets for they deserve it. Imagine the troubles they went through taking care of you and supporting you. I don’t mind the discomfort if it means my parents live comfortably.

Google Page Rank is Stupid

This blog has Google Page Rank 3 and I don’t think I deserve it. I sound like I’m complaining but my point here is that I have another blog, PromdiLiving.com, which is a PR 0 but I think deserves a PR 3 instead of this one. I started both blogs at about the same time, November of 2007. I migrated all my posts from gladita.wordpress.com to PromdiLiving so basically it has more content and more links than RaketScience. I also update it more often.

My fault really is that I haven’t looked into how Google Page Rank works and I didn’t study Search Engine Optimization. So I don’t know how exactly this blog got a PR3. Probably becaue a lot of people are searching ‘make money‘ and ‘entrepreneurship‘ that’s why I get more hits. And if you Google ‘raket‘ you’ll get my blog on the front page. It’s just very fortunate that the word ‘raket’ is racket in another language.

In rating a blog as to importance I don’t think Google PR should be the only basis. As a reader I would value a blog based on it’s content. Do I get something from reading it? What if a blog owner is really good in SEO and has a site with a higher Page Rank yet the content is full of crap, would you still read it again?

Content and knowledge on SEO should go hand in hand. This is something that it not happening in this blog. I think my content is decent if I should base that on the amount of time I spent preparing them. But this blog just have no enough content to merit a Google PR3 which is why I think Google Page Rank is stupid.

I recognize the potential of a PR3 and I think I have neglected this blog long enough. That is stupidity on my part. So I’ll try to make up for my shortcomings and update this blog more often in order for me to say I deserve a PR3. A little SEO won’t hurt so I’ll also be digging my head into several SEO books from now on. Expect more changes from this blog.

Mag On Wood Theme from ChiQ Montes of WPThemeDesigner has the elements I’ve been looking for in a theme. I’ve seen the same qualities mostly in Premium Themes. However, if I can get the same features from a free them then it would be a better option.Support is also a deciding factor for me. ChiQ Montes provides Support for the themes she designs.

There are loads of beautifully designed free Wordpress Themes out there that it’s hard to make your choice. When I choose a theme I make sure it somehow reflects my personality and the topic of my blog. An important consideration also is the ease of customization. I’m a newbie on blogging and by experience it takes a lot of time to make a theme look the way you wanted it. Therefore I would prefer a theme which is widgetized. Leave those techie stuff to the experts.

Have you tried making money from public domain products? When a work is in public domain it means these works are available for the public to use for free without having to pay any royalty fee. Public domain works generally fall under four categories:

1. Generic information like facts, numbers, ideas, titles, blank forms, etc.

2. Works granted or donated to the public domain.

3. Works by the government or its agents.

4. Formerly copyrighted works that have fallen into public domain or lost their copyright due to a number of different situations.

EBooks are very good reference materials and there is one available for virtually every topic. Books are really expensive if you buy them thus the availability of downloadable eBooks online can save you a lot of money. If you are in a habit of downloading them why not make money from them? How is this possible you ask, when these products can be had for free? There are people who don’t have the time nor patience to search and download these products. They are your potential market. If you already have a specific niche in mind, search for ebooks in the public domain sources and make your own product for your defined market.

I have tried making a few hundred pesos from eBooks of popular books and on Photoshop Tutorials at eBay. I downloaded the eBooks which are already in the public domain, compiled it in a CD, put on some nice cover and auctioned it on eBay. What’s nice about it is that you are not infringing any copyright. It’s all legal.

Rakets or Freelance Jobs Can Cushion the Effects of Retrenchment

In today’s economic crunch, we should always prepare ourselves for any event affecting our personal finances. There’s no such thing as job security. Small companies close shops and bigger companies sometimes need to trim down employees. Even government is rationalizing and getting rid of redundant organizations and positions. In events like these, we have to thank for rakets or freelance jobs to cushion the effects of loosing a permanent job.

The small income stream saved from rakets can help a lot in preparing you to look for another permanent job, if that is your choice. Sometimes these rakets or freelance jobs can even help you jump start your own business. Another option is to continue your rakets in a semi-full time status or you may even want that to be your full time job. Nevertheless, it pays to have part time jobs for additional income and as fall back in preparation for a worse-case scenario.

These came to mind as I am about to end my contract with a government program this December. I was a little worried at first but when I thought of my other part time jobs, I got to relax. It’s still six months from now so I have enough time to look for another fulltime job. The income I get from my rakets will be saved and used in the event that I will not get hired for a few months. Thank goodness for rakets!
