I turned 32 today and I have allotted a portion of my income earned from my rakets for my birthday celebration. We Pinoys really have this culture of always celebrating. If you have a lot of friends with different group denominations, it can even get more expensive.
You see, you celebrate with your family, you celebrate at the office and you celebrate with your friends. Can we not break this culture? Of course we can at the expense of being labeled a “kuripot” (miser). It will not kill you though so why not take the risk? Well, I am taking that risk. It’s not entirely bad but sometimes it can hurt the pocket. It’s hard to earn extra cash so why not make spending it even harder?
This year, the calendar saved me from having to celebrate at the office since my birthday falls on a Saturday. I also saved a little from spending at home since my birthday coincides with our barangay fiesta. So it’s two events in one celebration. As for friends, those who are my close friends get invited at home for our fiesta and for my birthday. We also started to trim down on our food preparations since oftentimes food served during fiestas only get wasted.
I can’t entirely quit on celebrating but I can at least trim down my expenses. A sound financial habit will be a good start for my birthday.

The last “big birthday bash” I had was when I turned 9. After that, I just spend my birthdays with my closest friends (about 4 or 5 of them) and with my family (usually just mom & dad).
Happy birthday! kasing edad na tayo!

@Tikalon – We don’t really need to spend a lot in order to be happy on our birthday. Spending it with the people closest to us can make it a memorable one.
@Ceb – Thanks! Magkasing edad lang pala tayo. I thought kuya na kita. Joke!
